Choosing Your Destinations

When planning a New England road trip, the first step is to choose which destinations to visit. With so many historic towns, scenic drives, and outdoor activities to choose from, it can be overwhelming. The best time to visit New England depends on your priorities. If you’re interested in fall foliage, plan your trip for late September through mid-October. Winter can be beautiful but also challenging due to snow and ice.

Mapping Out Your Route

I will provide you with the route I suggest to see most of New England in the time you have allowed. This route is perfect for a week to 10 days, but you could stop to see other small towns and turn it into a 2-3 week road trip.

If you want to plan your route here are some tips:

Key Destinations in New England

New England is known for its scenic drives, charming towns, and historic landmarks.  These destinations are some that you could easily spend an entire week exploring. I have not included them all in my road trip, but you can certainly add them yourself.

Acadia National Park, Maine

Acadia National Park is located on Mount Desert Island, off the coast of Maine. The park offers stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean, hiking trails, bike paths, and opportunities for kayaking and rock climbing. Be sure to visit Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on the East Coast, for a breathtaking sunrise.

White Mountains, New Hampshire

The White Mountains offer some of the most scenic drives in New England, including the Kancamagus Highway and the Mount Washington Auto Road. Visitors can hike to waterfalls, swim in crystal-clear lakes, or take a scenic train ride on the Conway Scenic Railroad. Cape Cod, Massachusetts

This is my suggested route to visit all New England States in 1 week -10 days. It is especially beautiful during the fall.

Here is the general route that would take 10 days and is based on the best way to see some of every state.

 

Boston, Massachusetts

Boston, Massachusetts, is a must-visit city on any New England road trip. It is a city steeped in history and culture, with plenty to see and do for visitors of all ages.

One of the most popular attractions in Boston is the Freedom Trail. This 2.5-mile trail takes visitors on a journey through history, with stops at 16 significant sites, including the Massachusetts State House, Paul Revere House, and the USS Constitution Museum. The trail is easy to follow and can be done on foot or by bike.

Another must-see attraction in Boston is Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox. Even if you’re not a baseball fan, the park is worth a visit for its history and atmosphere. Guided tours are available, and visitors can catch a game during the season.

The Museum of Fine Arts is a top destination for those interested in art and culture. The museum has an extensive collection of art worldwide, including works by Monet, Van Gogh, and Rembrandt. The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is also worth a visit, with its stunning courtyard and collection of art and artifacts.

 

Overall, Boston is a city for history buffs to sports fans to foodies. It is a must-visit destination on any New England road trip. It is also the best city to fly into as a starting point to visit New England.

 

Portsmouth, New Hampshire

One of the main attractions in Portsmouth is the Strawbery Banke Museum. This living history museum features restored homes and exhibits that showcase the town’s colonial and maritime history. Visitors can take a guided tour or explore the grounds at their own pace.

The USS Albacore Museum and Park is a must-visit for those interested in maritime history. This museum features a decommissioned submarine that visitors can explore and exhibits on underwater warfare and naval technology.

Conway, NH

Conway, New Hampshire, is a charming town in the heart of the White Mountains. It is a popular destination for tourists looking for a peaceful and relaxing getaway. The town is known for its scenic beauty, outdoor activities, and friendly locals.

This is the place for outdoor fun! No matter the time of year, Conway has fun outdoor activities for you and your family. Skiing in the winter, hiking in the summer and lots to do in between those seasons.

One of the main attractions in Conway is the Conway Scenic Railroad. Visitors can ride on an old-fashioned steam train and enjoy the stunning views of the White Mountains. The train ride takes about an hour and a half and is a great way to see the area.

Conway has plenty of trails to explore for those who love to hike. The White Mountains are home to some of the best hiking in the country, and Conway is no exception. Visitors can hike to the top of Mount Chocorua, which offers stunning views of the surrounding area.

 

 

Stowe, VT

Stowe, Vermont, is a charming town in the northern part of the state. This may be the single most beautiful town in the fall in New England.

One of the main attractions in Stowe is the Stowe Mountain Resort. The resort offers various activities, including skiing, snowboarding, and hiking. Visitors can take a scenic gondola ride to the top of Mount Mansfield, Vermont’s highest peak, and enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.

In addition to outdoor activities, Stowe has a vibrant downtown area with plenty of shops, restaurants, and galleries to explore. The town is known for its historic architecture and charming New England atmosphere.

One of the most popular attractions in Stowe is the Trapp Family Lodge, founded by the von Trapp family of “The Sound of Music” fame. The lodge offers a variety of activities, including cross-country skiing, hiking, and horse-drawn carriage rides.

 

Burlington, Vermont

Burlington, Vermont, is a charming city on Lake Champlain’s eastern shore. It is known for its stunning views of the lake and the Adirondack Mountains and its vibrant arts and culture scene.

Visitors to Burlington can explore the city’s many galleries, museums, and theaters. The Flynn Center for the Performing Arts is a popular venue that hosts a variety of shows, from Broadway musicals to jazz concerts. Visitors can also check out the Yale Art Gallery, which has an impressive collection of art worldwide.

Foodies will appreciate New Haven’s famous pizza scene. The city has several well-known pizzerias, including Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana and Sally’s Apizza. These establishments have been serving delicious pizza for decades and are well worth a visit.

Mystic, CT

Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Cape Cod is the summer vacation spot in New England. Beautiful beaches, lots of waves and tons to do. Make this stop one day or head farther down the Cape and spend a few days here.
