- Breast milk storage bags– Important to help store breast milk if you need some on vacation.
- Foam stickers– These are great for sticking on the seat in front of you and easily pulling back off. Keep your baby entertained.
- Bottles– Pack as few as you can get away with because they are so bulky!
- Sippy Cup– This will be your child’s go-to cup for the duration of the trip if they have outgrown bottles.
- Portable Car Seat- If you are flying you can check your car seat at the gate or at baggage claim. If you are driving to your destination, make sure that your car seat is installed according to manufacturer’s instructions and it can be used rear-facing for a baby up until age two! If you want your baby in a car seat on the flight there are lots of options available.
- Travel crib or tent– If you have a little one who struggles to sleep but won’t be happy in a carrier, this can help especially on a plane.
- Sun protection– It’s easy to forget sunscreen or appropriate clothing when you are packing for baby! Make sure that you have plenty of hats, sunglasses and other sun gear with the SPF rating as high as possible.
- White noise machine or travel fan-You never know if you will have loud neighbors or be on a busy street. If you need to travel lighter you can download white noise apps on your phone.
- Diaper rash ointment-Baby’s skin can get irritated from sitting for hours at time! Bring along diaper cream as it may be hard to find at your destination.
- Car seat carrier- If you are traveling by car, it is really handy if your baby’s carseat will fit into the back of a taxi or Uber! There are a few on the market that I recommend.
- Extra clothes- It doesn’t take much time for babies to get totally soaked through from sweat and accidents. Pack some in your carry on or travel diaper bag.
- Travel High Chair– These handy contraptions will save you from lugging a bulky and heavy high chair to your destination. Plus it will allow you to eat at restaurants with ease.
- Stroller– If traveling by air, it is best not to bring the stroller on board but check it at the gate so it is ready for you as soon as you deplane.
- Snacks-Snacks from home are always a good idea.
- Storable food– Pack foods that are easy to transport and don’t need cooking, like applesauce or fruit cups.
- Bibs– Babies are still messy eaters no matter where in the world they are. Keep these on hand to avoid the cleanup if you forget one.
- Lightweight blankets- It is great to be able to layer with thin layers in case it is too warm or cold.
- Toys– Bring your babies favorite toy plus a few new ones that will be exciting.
- Diapers– If you use disposable diapers, pack as few as you can get away with. Check to see if they are available at your destination. If you use cloth diapers its more difficult as you need to have a washing machine at the destination, but it is doable.
- Baby carrier– Get this on your body and carry baby the whole time to avoid sore backs from lifting or carrying a heavy car seat or holding the baby in your arms.
- Travel bassinet – A lot of hotels have these but if you have an easy to pack and transport they are great for road trips with kids.
- Wipes– I always have a bag of wipes in my carry on (even now that my kids are older.) They clean up almost any spill and get rid of sticky hands.
- Travel Diaper Bag– This can have all the essentials in it for a quick diaper change. You may have a big and bulky diaper bag at home but you don’t want to haul that sucker around! There are great inexpensive travel bags that hold enough without the weight.
- Nursing Cover– These allow you to breastfeed with some privacy for you and your baby. You can feed on the plane or on the go.
- Thermometer– Pack a thermometer to make sure your baby doesn’t have a fever. Getting sick while traveling is no fun!
- Baby Tylenol– You don’t want to run to an unknown pharmacy in the middle of the night if your baby is teething or sick.
- Inflatable baby tub– If space isn’t at a premium you may want to pack an inflatable tub. If you have a nice hotel or AirBnb that has one, they are often too small for an infant to bathe in and this can be used in the kitchen sink when needed.
Tips for flying with a baby
- Have your TSA pre-check or Global Entry so you can go through security faster.
- Get your baby ready for sleep before you go, it’s easier than changing them into pjs on the plane.
- Bring a sleep sack that can be used as an in-flight blanket.
- Bring snacks: We always pack organic applesauce, fruit and whole grain cereal bars to have on hand for the flight.
- Pack essentials like diapers, wipes and formula/breast milk into a travel diaper bag so you always have things in arms reach.
- Carry your baby through security.
- Make sure you have the right travel documents. Your baby will need a form of photo ID and it is recommended that they also have their own passport or at least some sort of documentation from your country to show where they are an citizen. If flying internationally, make sure your child has either their original birth certificate with them in case there’s any issue at all.
I hope this helps you figure out what travel essentials are for your baby. Flying or road tripping with a baby can seem intimidating and a lot of people choose to wait until their kids are older. I have been traveling with my kids since my oldest was 3 months old. It takes a little more effort, but the value of traveling with your kids can not be overstated. Train them young!
