Are you going on a weekend getaway? It’s important to pack smart so that the vacation is easy and stress-free.
You want to avoid rolling into your hotel with three suitcases and a few overnight bags. Packing light is the name of the game.
Here are some great ways to minimize your load when packing for a weekend away:
- Check to see what is available at your hotel or Airbnb. For example, If you are going on a beach vacation for the weekend, check to see if your hotel offers beach towels.
- Check the weather, so you don’t have to pack a bunch of “just in case “clothes.
- Bring enough clothing items for the weekend, but stick with a few colors that can be mixed and matched, so you will only need to bring a few things.
- If you aren’t picky about toiletries, you can use what is complimentary at the hotel, like shampoo, soap, etc.
Here are the few things you actually need on a weekend getaway
Clothes: Depending on the weather and activities you have planned, make sure to bring a few items that will give you enough options. A couple of pairs of pants, some t-shirts, shorts or skirts, and a light jacket should do the trick. You may want to bring something nice to wear to dinner.
Toiletries: Remember to bring all your essentials, such as shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothpaste, and toothbrush. Additionally, if you’re going somewhere sunny, bring sunscreen and sunglasses.
Makeup: If you wear makeup, grab your makeup essentials and only your essentials. You are already beautiful!
Necessary documents: If you need any documentation for your trip (such as a passport or driver’s license), pack them first!
Chargers: Make sure to take all necessary chargers for your devices.
Wallet: Don’t forget to bring your wallet with credit cards, cash, and other necessary documents, such as an insurance card or ID
Entertainment: If you are going on a road trip, bring some books, magazines, music, and games to keep yourself entertained while traveling.
Medication and/or medical devices like a CPAP.
Extras you may want on your weekend
Pack a camera or phone with a camera to capture memories of your travels.
Bring a first aid kit if something unexpected happens.
Bring a travel journal.
If you plan on doing any outdoor activities like hiking or camping, bring bug spray.
Snacks for the flight or the road trip, or treats you like to have around
If you plan on sightseeing or outdoor activities during the weekend away, bring appropriate shoes (often a change of shoes) and outerwear.
Finally, ensure you have enough space in your bag for souvenirs from the weekend! With these items packed into one suitcase or lightweight bag, you should be ready for a great weekend away!

My recent favorite is this Kenneth Cole 20″ suitcase that is very durable and looks a little nicer than a basic carry-on.

What to pack for a winter weekend away
When packing for a winter weekend away, you should focus on staying warm and comfortable. Here are some suggestions for what to bring:
Thick gloves and a scarf: Bring a pair of thick gloves and a scarf if the temperatures are freezing. Make sure to choose waterproof materials or thermal layers if you plan to go outside for skiing or snowboarding.
Warm jackets and pants: Your outerwear is probably the most crucial part of your winter wardrobe – so make sure to pick out fabrics that insulate well while keeping you dry at the same time. Look for down jackets, insulated pants, and other water-resistant items that keep you warm in cold weather.
Hats and boots: To keep your body temperature regulated, bring thick hats and insulated boots. You can stay out in the cold for extended periods without feeling uncomfortable.
Layers: Packing multiple layers is key for staying warm in cold weather. Make sure to include long thermal underwear, sweaters, and jackets to adjust your outfit according to the temperature outside.
You might feel like you are packing a ton for a winter weekend away, but if you pack thinner layers, you can still get away with only a carry-on. For packable coats that keep you warm, check out my post on packable puffer coats. With the right items, you will be ready to take on any cold-weather adventures during your weekend away.
No matter where you are heading or with whom, you will have a great time without overpacking!
