Things to Do in NYC with Teens: A Comprehensive Guide
New York City is a city that never sleeps and has something for everyone. From the bright lights of Times Square to the historical landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty, the city has no shortage of activities.
But what about teenagers? They so often feel dragged around with their parents and younger siblings. Here are some things that they will love! Plus, my teenagers have loved the cool factor of being in the city and making some decisions themselves!
We live very close to NYC, and I always try to plan a day with each of my teens to go and do things that they find fun. Here are some of their favorites.

Central Park is a massive green space in the heart of Manhattan. It offers a variety of activities for teens, including biking, hiking, and picnicking. The park also has several famous landmarks, such as the Bethesda Fountain and the Central Park Zoo.
Times Square
Times Square is a bustling commercial and entertainment hub in the heart of Manhattan. It is famous for its bright lights, billboards, and bustling crowds. Teens will love exploring the area’s shops, restaurants, and theaters and taking pictures in the middle of all of the chaos.
Empire State Building
The Empire State Building is one of the most recognizable skyscrapers in the world. It offers stunning city views from its observation deck on the 86th floor. Teens can also visit the building’s museum to learn about its history and construction.

NYC has a surprising number of outdoor activities for kids and teenagers. Here are some of my kids’ favorite options:
Biking and Electric Scooters in Central Park
Central Park is a great place to bike, with over 6 miles of dedicated bike lanes and plenty of scenic views. Bike rentals are available near the park, Electric Scooter rentals are even more places, and there are also guided bike tours for those who want to learn more about the park’s history and landmarks. It’s a fun and active way to explore the city’s most famous park.
Bronx Zoo
The Bronx Zoo is one of the largest zoos in the country and an excellent destination for animal lovers. With over 6,000 animals from more than 700 species, there’s something for everyone to see. The zoo also offers exhibits and activities like the butterfly garden and the Congo Gorilla Forest. It’s a great way to spend a day outdoors and learn about different animals.
Coney Island
Coney Island is a classic NYC destination that offers a variety of outdoor activities for teens. From amusement park rides to the beach and boardwalk, there’s plenty to do. The amusement park features classic rides like the Cyclone roller coaster and the Wonder Wheel. The beach and boardwalk offer a chance to relax and soak up some sun. It’s a fun and iconic way to experience NYC’s beach culture.

New York City is a shopper’s paradise, and there are plenty of options for teens seeking retail therapy. Here are some of the best shopping spots in the city.
Fifth Avenue
Fifth Avenue is a must-visit destination for any serious shopper in NYC. This iconic street is home to some of the world’s most famous luxury brands, including Tiffany & Co., Gucci, Prada, and Louis Vuitton.
Even if you’re not in the market for high-end fashion, Fifth Avenue is worth a visit for the window shopping alone.
SoHo
SoHo is another popular shopping destination for teens in NYC. This trendy neighborhood is home to a super cool a mix of high-end boutiques and more affordable chain stores.

Chelsea Market

Off the Beaten Path in NYC for Teens
These next few items are things my teenagers especially love to do when we visit New York City. While some are better known, all of them have made my teenagers more excited.
The Edge in Hudson Yards
The Edge in Hudson Yards is a popular tourist attraction in New York City that offers stunning views of the city skyline. It features a glass floor and walls that provide visitors a unique and thrilling experience. In my opinion, these are the best views of NYC by far, and because it is new, everyone is talking about it, which also makes most teenagers more enthusiastic.
The High Line
The High Line is a popular destination in New York City that my own kids think is super cool. It’s a walking park built on old train tracks very near Hudson Yards. The park features stunning views of the city skyline, art installations, games like chess and checkers, and lots of places to take selfies!!
Brooklyn Bridge
The Brooklyn Bridge is an iconic landmark in New York City that offers stunning skyline views. It is an excellent destination for teenagers who want to explore the city and see something off the beaten path.
The bridge spans the East River, connecting Brooklyn and Manhattan. It is over 1 mile long and can be walked or biked. Walking across the bridge is popular for tourists and locals alike, but it can be crowded during peak hours.
For a more peaceful experience, teenagers can try walking the bridge early in the morning or late at night. The views are still incredible, and there are fewer people around.
The bridge also has a pedestrian walkway separate from the bike lane, making it safe for pedestrians to explore. Along the way are benches where teenagers can rest and take in the views.
Staten Island Ferry
The Staten Island Ferry is a free ferry service between Manhattan and Staten Island. It is a free way to get stunning views of the New York City skyline and the Statue of Liberty.
The ferry runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, departing every 30 minutes during peak hours and every hour during off-peak hours. The ride itself takes approximately 25 minutes each way.
The ferry is a great option for teenagers seeking an off-the-beaten-path experience in NYC. It’s a unique way to see the city from a different perspective without spending money. Plus, it’s an excellent opportunity to take some Instagram-worthy photos.
While on the ferry, teenagers can grab a snack or drink from the onboard concession stand or simply enjoy the views from the outdoor decks.
Museum of Ice Cream
The Museum of Ice Cream is a recently popular museum in New York City. As the name suggests, this museum focuses on all things ice cream and is a perfect destination for teenagers looking for something fun and off the beaten path.
