I’ve traveled this route several times, and while each option has its advantages, there’s one I recommend for most first-time visitors. Here’s how the different transportation options compare—and which one I would choose depending on your travel style.

Additionally, there are limited flight options, so it may not be as flexible as other modes of transportation.

Scenic Route via Chemin du Roy

Depending on traffic, this route is approximately 280 km long and takes around 4 hours to drive. The advantage of taking this route is that it offers stunning views of the river and the surrounding countryside, making it a great option for those who want to take their time and enjoy the scenery.

If you want to make a day of it you can plan on stopping at one of these two locations.

1. Trois-Rivières: This historic city is located roughly halfway between Montreal and Quebec City, and is home to many interesting museums, historic sites, and cultural attractions.
2. Mauricie National Park: This beautiful park is located just north of Trois-Rivières, and offers stunning scenery, hiking trails, and wildlife viewing opportunities.

Arriving in Quebec City

Upon arrival in Quebec City, visitors will find themselves in one of North America’s most charming and historic cities. The city’s Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a maze of narrow streets, 17th and 18th-century buildings, and historic landmarks.

Once in the city,  you will find the public transportation system efficient and easy to use. The Réseau de Transport de la Capitale (RTC) operates a bus network that serves all areas of the city, including the Old Town. Fares are reasonable, and tickets can be purchased at various locations throughout the city, including convenience stores and transit stations.

Overall, getting to and around Quebec City is a straightforward and enjoyable experience, with various transportation options available to suit every traveler’s needs.

Can You Visit Montreal and Quebec City on the Same Trip?

Absolutely! In fact, I think visiting both cities on the same vacation is one of the best ways to experience Eastern Canada. While they’re only about three hours apart, each city has its own personality. Montreal is lively and cosmopolitan, with incredible restaurants, diverse neighborhoods, and a vibrant arts scene. Quebec City, on the other hand, feels like stepping into Europe, with cobblestone streets, centuries-old architecture, and the charm of Old Quebec.

My Recommended Montreal and Quebec City Itinerary

If this is your first visit to Quebec, I wouldn’t rush between the two cities. Instead, I’d spend four or five days exploring them at a relaxed pace.

Days 1–2: Montreal

Start your trip in Montreal. Spend your time wandering Old Montreal, visiting Notre-Dame Basilica, exploring neighborhoods like Plateau Mont-Royal, and, of course, eating as many bagels, pastries, and poutine as possible. Montreal is one of those cities that’s just as enjoyable to wander as it is to sightsee.

Day 3: Travel to Quebec City

I recommend taking the train from Montreal to Quebec City. It’s comfortable, scenic, and takes you from downtown to downtown, so you don’t have to worry about driving or parking. Arriving in the afternoon still gives you time for an evening walk through Old Quebec and dinner overlooking the St. Lawrence River.

Days 4–5: Quebec City

Spend the next two days exploring Old Quebec, visiting Fairmont Le Château Frontenac, walking the city walls, browsing local shops, and enjoying one of the most charming historic districts in North America. Don’t forget to slow down—Quebec City is a place best experienced on foot.

For a first time visitor I would take the train between the two. It’s easy and quick and parking a car in either city is expensive.
