DIY your own Travel Gallery Wall

Are you looking for a creative way to show off your travel memories? There are many ways that people have done this, but one of the most popular is by making a gallery wall. This post will provide inspiration and guidance on how to make your own!

 

We tend to buy artwork when we are on our travels. We bought this beautiful oil painting with golds and reds while we were in Sweden.

The mirrors were bought  in Jordan.

The print on the top left is of Ventian houses and was purchased while we visited Venice.

We originally had them all over our home in different nooks, but decided that we wanted them in one place to be able to look at all the places we have traveled. When we look at our gallery wall we are happy and remember our amazing trips! Plus it gives us  our home a great global style that we love!

How to plan out a travel gallery wall

• Gather up all your travel souvenirs.
• Decide on a common theme for the gallery wall.
• Plan out where in your home you want to hang it. Do you have a blank wall that needs a focal point?
• Do you want it to be in the middle of your home so everyone sees it when they walk through the door? Does one specific spot have art or other items already on them, but need something new to go with them?
• Plan out where each item will hang. This is important because if you want all the frames and artwork to line up nicely, then make sure they are evenly spaced apart from another.
• Pick out the art or frames you want to hang. The amount of items for your gallery wall will depend on the size and shape of the space that it is going in as well as how many different themes you are using.
• Create a list or sketch so you know what goes where, then go shopping!
• Once everything comes back from being framed, arrange them on the floor until they look perfect together. Install all your hardware and make sure they’re hung correctly with the hooks facing out towards anything walking past, not inside away from people’s eye sight. Keep adding new things whenever possible to keep yourself inspired by travels everywhere!
• Decide on your layout by looking at Pinterest, magazines pictures, or just making it up as you go.

The best gallery wall layouts for different spaces

• If you like a really ordered look, you’re going to want more than one row of pictures and a uniform spacing between them. Use simple frames that are all the same color. .A simple grid layout works well for any size room while still making it look nice and symmetrical.
• If you’re feeling a little more free, use different color frames or shapes to create some variation in your gallery wall

• Varying heights of pictures can make things much livelier than an even row of uniform height canvases! Choose one picture higher and two or three lower for added interest.
• If space is limited, try using the entire vertical length of your wall with lots of small photos staggered into rows like wallpaper on a staircase. Especially if there’s not enough horizontal space available on your walls-go high instead of wide for maximum impact.

• Try making a gallery wall in the corner of your stairway by incorporating both walls!

 

• For something with depth, put two rows of different height frames in front of each other so that there’s no break in the middle. You can also do this by alternating wider prints with smaller ones depending on how much wall space you have at your disposal.

 

• And finally if you just don’t know what to do – mix things up! Use an eclectic variety of shapes, colors, spacing, and different frames.

 

The more open the space, the better a gallery wall will look. If you are using one theme in particular make sure that it’s at least half of all the photos on your wall and use different sizes for each photo so everything is visible from afar.

Do not forget to include lots of colors or even black and white! It can also be fun to create themes by traveling type like “Winter Wonderland” with picturesque snow scenes, or “Summer Vacation” with sandy beaches and palm trees.
