WISCONSIN DELLS: THE ULTIMATE FAMILY DESTINATION

When it comes to family vacations that deliver non-stop fun for every age group, few destinations can match the appeal of Wisconsin Dells. If you have never heard of Wisconsin Dells, you aren’t alone. Before I was invited on this trip, I had heard the name, but knew nothing about it. It is a central Wisconsin resort town about an hour outside of Madison, and it has perfected the art of family entertainment, no matter the size or age of your family.

WATERPARK CAPITAL OF THE WORLD

Wisconsin Dells didn’t earn its nickname “Waterpark Capital of the World” by accident. The area has more indoor and outdoor waterparks than anywhere else on the planet, which means you can enjoy water play the entire year long.

Noah’s Ark Waterpark, America’s largest waterpark, is 70 acres of waterslides, wave pools and playscapes.  From the no-way-am-I-going-on-that Black Anaconda to the gentle Tadpole Bay for toddlers, there is something fun for the adrenaline junkies and the wimps.

The best part is that the area’s indoor waterparks maintain tropical temperatures even when snow is inches deep outside. Great Wolf Lodge, always a hit with the under 10 crowd, has a 33,000-square-foot indoor waterpark exclusively for hotel guests, complete with a four-story treehouse and interactive water playground.

Kalahari Resorts brings African safari theming to its massive indoor waterpark, with a  FlowRider surfing simulator and a master-blaster water coaster that uses powerful jets to propel riders uphill.

If you prefer a waterpark that is more nature and less attraction, the Land of Natura is an obstacle course of bouncy inflatables on a man-made lake. This newer attraction is a nature lover’s paradise. In addition to the inflatables, there are kayaks, treetop walks, and a beautiful river view.

BEYOND THE WATER SLIDES

While waterparks might be the main draw, Wisconsin Dells offers an impressive array of family activities that extend far beyond waterparks. In fact, the Dells became famous because of the beautiful rock formations on the river.

The famous Dells boat tours remain a must-do family experience. These narrated cruises through the dramatic sandstone gorges have been delighting visitors since 1875. The Upper Dells tour takes families through narrow canyons with towering rock formations, while guides share fascinating geological and historical information that brings the landscape to life.

If you want a little excitement on the water, Wisconsin Dells Jetboat Tours is a high-speed adventure through the same scenic waterways. These powerful boats navigate tight turns and sudden stops that leave passengers soaked and laughing. It is an exhilarating ride that still shows off the beautiful Dells.

For those who want to a spookier experience, the Ghost Boat tour was one of our favorites. You leave on a boat heading to a beautiful picnic spot on the Dells, while riding, you learn that there were “difficulties” faced by the boat ahead of you. You arrive to learn that zombies are walking around the area, and you need ot avoid them.

While this isn’t for young kids, if you have kids over 10 who don’t mind people jumping out at them, this is a fabulous experience. The one-mile loop is easy to walk (after you get off the boat), and before it gets dark, you can see some amazing rock formations up close.

EDUCATIONAL ENTERTAINMENT

Smart moms know that the best vacations combine fun with learning, and Wisconsin Dells delivers on both fronts. The H.H. Bennett Studio Museum gives the family a view of early photography and the history of tourism in the area. No stuffy museum stuff here. The small museum gives information about H.H. Bennett, one of the main photographers who made the Dells famous. You will be amazed to learn about the dangerous lengths photographers went to capture the perfect shot, including the famous “Leaping the Chasm” photograph that required a death-defying jump between rock formations. It is worth the 30 minutes to an hour.

THRILLS FOR EVERY AGE

Wizard Quest

Wisconsin Dells excels at activities that work for mixed-age family groups. The area’s numerous go-kart tracksare competitive fun for teens and adults and the slower kiddie tracks for younger children meaning everyone can have fun together. Sneaky Pete’s Wild West Show combines a theatrical performance with a hearty meal, creating an immersive experience where families cheer on the good guys while enjoying good food.

Wizard Quest is a great place to spend a rainy afternoon in Wisconsin Dells. This immersive journey to find various treasures throughout the complex will be a real hit for kids under 14. Especially if they love fantasy.

PRACTICAL FAMILY CONSIDERATIONS

Wisconsin Dells has mastered the art of family-friendly logistics. Most major resorts offer package deals that include accommodations, waterpark access, and meals, simplifying vacation planning and budgeting. Many properties feature spacious family suites with separate sleeping areas for children and parents, plus mini-refrigerators and microwaves for storing snacks and preparing simple meals.

The compact nature of the Dells area means families can easily walk between many attractions. Parking is generally plentiful and often free, reducing stress for families traveling with multiple children and lots of gear.

Most restaurants in the area cater specifically to families, offering extensive children’s menus, high chairs, and quick food.  Plus fun restaurants like Paul Bunyan’s Cook Shanty (eat some donuts for me), or Moosejaw Pizza give kids fun things to look at and do, while parents can eat at leisure.

CREATING LASTING MEMORIES

What sets Wisconsin Dells apart as a family destination is its ability to create shared experiences that appeal to multiple generations. Grandparents can enjoy scenic boat tours while grandchildren head to waterpark adventures. Parents can relax in resort spas while teenagers challenge themselves on adventure courses. Evening entertainment options like dinner shows and scenic tours provide opportunities for the entire extended family to enjoy experiences together.

Perhaps most importantly, Wisconsin Dells offers families a chance to disconnect from daily routines and focus on spending quality time together. Whether splashing in waterparks, exploring natural wonders, or simply enjoying resort amenities, families find themselves naturally engaging with each other in ways that busy daily life often doesn’t allow.

PLANNING YOUR FAMILY ADVENTURE

The key to a successful Wisconsin Dells family vacation lies in planning for diverse interests and energy levels. Most families find that a 4-5 day stay provides enough time to experience both waterpark thrills and natural attractions without feeling rushed. Booking accommodations that include waterpark access is key to the best value and convenience for families.

My personal recommendation would be to stay at Kalahari Resort if you have kids who want to be at the waterpark for most of the day. If you have kids who want to do multiple things, or older kids, I would stay at the Wilderness Resort. It is closer to other attractions and has plenty of waterparks, but also has nice dining in the resort.

Wisconsin Dells has spent decades perfecting the family vacation experience, creating a destination where parents can relax knowing their children are safe and entertained, while kids enjoy non-stop fun and adventure. It’s this careful balance of excitement and comfort, adventure and relaxation, that makes Wisconsin Dells a family destination worth visiting again and again.

I was a guest of Wisconsin Dells, however, all opinions are my own.
