Cong is a quaint historical village located in Mayo County and close to Galway County. The small streams and historical sights make Cong a magical place to visit. Ireland is a vast place, and there are tons of beautiful villages and towns, but Cong is one of the most charming and off-the-beaten-path.
Right off the Wild Atlantic Way and not far from Connemara you will find the peaceful village of Cong.
Cong is the kind of town you want to stop over on your Ireland road trip, or it’s a town you stay in while you explore Galway, the Cliffs of Moher, and tons of other beautiful towns.
Here are some awesome things to do when you visit Cong, Ireland.
Ashford Castle
This remarkable medieval castle dates back to 1228. Today, Ashford Castle acts as a luxury hotel and resort. Even if you are not planning on staying the night, Ashford Castle is a great place to visit. It is one of the best luxury hotels in Ireland.
The castle was built in 1228 by the House of Burke. After many years of different owners, it was bought by the famous Guinness family in 1852. It was sold in 1939 when it first became a luxury hotel. Today, guests can enjoy world-class spas and golf courses.
The Ashford Castle offers many activities. Guests can spend a day at Ireland’s School of Falconry, where they can get up close and personal with majestic creatures like hawks, owls, and other exotic birds. (read more below) There is also fishing, archery, and horse riding available. If guests want to relax, there is also a spa, cinema, or different workshops to experience.
There is an array of dining options with six restaurants on-site, and if guests just want to relax with a pint, there is the Prince of Wales Bar which was built in 1800.
Royal Abbey of Cong
Another historical site dating back to the 12th century is Cong Abby. Visitors can explore the ruins of the Abby, which is in the center of Cong. Monk’s Fishing House is a popular site near Cong Abby and offers beautiful river views.
The Quiet Man Museum and the Statue of Wayne and Maureen O’Hara
The 1952 Hollywood movie, “The Quiet Man,” was filmed in this quaint village and today visitors can see memories of the movie throughout the town.
The Quiet Man Museum is a great place to visit, even for those that have never seen the movie. The museum itself is in a 1920’s cottage, which is an exact replica of the cottage in the movie. Once inside, guests can view costumes and artifacts from the movie.
A Quiet Man walking tour can be arranged, which brings you to famous sights from the movie, including the famous statue of Wayne and Maureen O’Hara.

Get Lost Walking the Cong Nature Loop
Tourist can explore nature by walking the Cong Nature Loop. The walk takes about an hour and a half and passes some of the noted sights of Cong. Starting near Cong Abby, visitors can walk across the stream past The Monk’s Fishing House and through nature. Guests will pass The Guinness Tower on this peaceful stroll through nature.
Explore Pigeon Hole Cave
For adventurous tourists, they can explore Pigeon Hole Cave. This cave is right outside the city center. Here visitors can walk through the natural cave and try to catch a glimpse of the legendary white fairy trout in the stream.
Legend has it that there was a lady to be married to the king’s son. However, the son died before they were to marry and the story is that she was taken by fairies and turned into a white trout.
It is a difficult walk down and hike up so it isn’t for small kids or elderly as there are ton’s of trip hazards.
Go on a Hawk Walk at Ireland’s School of Falconry
If you want to see some of the most majestic creatures in nature, go on a hawk walk at Ireland’s School of Falconry. You can get up close and personal with hawks, owls, and other exotic birds. You might even be able to hold one of these beautiful animals!
