My start in travel

I grew up in a military family and spent a fair bit of my life living overseas. I started my life in Germany, so you could say I was born traveling. My father was a specialist for the army in the Arab world, and we lived in Tunisia, Jordan, and Israel.

I spent my formative years in countries that only the most adventurous add to their travel bucket list, but I would be disingenuous if I told you I took advantage of it all the time. I groaned when my parents would drag us off to another desert castle, I would read on the long drive to Petra instead of looking out the windows, and I once chose to stay in a hotel rather than go to the souk in Istanbul (an oversight I have made up for since).

My parents showed us the world, and their love of travel must have soaked into us because we are all avid and enthusiastic travelers now.

My favorite trips include a trip to Florence with my parents and siblings, where we stayed in an old winery, a trip to the lake district of England, where we stayed on a working farm, a Nile river cruise, Prince Edward Island with my husband and kids, and weekend trips to Saratoga, NY.

The journey continues

My husband and I have been married for 27 years and have three wonderful boys. I was lucky enough to marry someone who loves to travel as much as I do and doesn’t mind every extra penny going to it. My boys have grown up seeing the world and are adventurous travelers in their own right.

As a parent, I have realized the joy of exposing your children to the wonders this world has to offer. I am delighted when the kids compare grocery stores from different countries, amazed when they pick up the pronunciation of a new word, and so gratified when we come home. They frequently talk to each other about the amazing things they have seen. I think I love traveling with my kids because I want them to understand what I understood from an early age: that the world is large, but people are the same everywhere.
