How to score really cheap flights with Skyscanner

There may be affiliate links in this post. Read my disclosure policy to learn more.

Skyscanner is my number one travel tool!

There are so many helpful travel apps that help you find travel deals and budget travel options.

I use many of these apps when planning a trip and they are super helpful but of all of them Skyscanner is my favorite. I really don’t ever travel without it and here is why you should use it, too! Stop what you are doing and download it now and follow along to learn how to use this powerful tool. Cheap flights are a few clicks away.

Download the free skyscanner app:

Skyscanner iOS App Download or Skyscanner Android App Download

My family and I travel a lot. So much so that people ask me questions they would normally be too polite to ask. They ask, “How do you afford to travel all the time?” I understand the question. We are a middle-class family paying for all the things a normal middle-class family pays for: mortgage, sports, music lessons, new shoes, car payments, etc. So now you may ask yourself, “How do you afford to travel all the time?” Well, enter my favorite travel tool…..

Skyscanner. The truth is we rarely choose where we are going to travel, we just choose when we can travel, and skyscanner helps us to find the cheapest flights very easily.

Skyscanner is unique because it allows you to pick you departure city and travel dates, and then it searches everywhere as your arrival city!

This app is my favorite tool for cheap flights and has allowed us to score tickets from the New York area to Copenhagen via Iceland for $230. We have flown to Ireland for $330. We have flown to LA for $196 and Chicago for $70. (These are all roundtrip fares!) It has enabled our family to see the world, and I would be selfish to keep it to myself.

Here is how to use Skyscanner to find cheap flights

If you haven’t done this yet, download the free skyscanner app:

Skyscanner iOS App Download or Skyscanner Android App Download

For example, let’s say your kids have the week of Thanksgiving off and you want to travel.

Then open your app and select the “Flights” button at the top.

IMG_0824

You will need to input your departing city. In this case our family always chooses New York. You input your dates, and then the amazing part, you type in “everywhere”!

You will then see a lot of countries listed with prices under your search.

IMG_0827

Click in to the country of your choice to explore the deals.

IMG_0828

Once you click into the county of your choice, there will be options of destination cities. In this example I chose Oslo.

IMG_0829

Now I can see the best fares than have been found for the next week to a few months away.

IMG_0830

I scroll down to the dates I’m looking for and find my best deal.

IMG_0831

Then I can pick the airline and flight times that I want!

*If none of those prices are quite where I want them I can also click the bottom left corner on the bell and create a price alert. I will be emailed whenever prices go up or down for the flight I have selected.

Is Skyscanner the best tool to use to get cheap flights?

Skyscanner is not the only tool to use, but I will tell you that most travel bloggers use it. When I polled 100 bloggers, 95% said it was the first tool they used to find the cheapest flights.

It is also a free tool. Our family also uses a number of subscription flight finders just because we travel so often. Among them are Scott’s Cheap Flights, Dollar Flight Club plus a few others. If you want to put out the money I recommend using Scott’s Cheap Flights.

The downside of the subscription cheap flight programs is that most of the deals are from NYC, Chicago, Boston, Washington DC and LA. If you don’t live near one of those airports you won’t see much use.

Despite having so many choices on how to book flight deals, the vast majority of our flights are found on Skyscanner. Save your money and look on Skyscanner and use the extra money for vacation!

Do you want to travel more with your family? Skyscanner is the best way to do it!

5 tips to prepare your kids for a trip

Traveling with kids is often seen as a frustration, but it can be a rewarding experience. Here are my best 5 tips for traveling with kids

Why I Travel With My Kids And Why You Should Too!

Why I travel with my kids and why you should too! The main things is to help your kids understand the world around them and how they can be participants or observers.

How to avoid the dreaded “Are we there yet?”

“Are we there yet?” “Are we there yet?” No other phrase can make a grown adult want to scream! I remember asking it myself as a kid, and my parents groaned, and I never understood why. So why do kids all ask, “Are we there yet?”. My theory on the never ending “are we there yet?” is that young kids really have no grasp of time. You can tell a young child that it is going to be 2 hours until you are there, and you might as well have said 200 hours or 20 minutes. When my kids were very young (under 5) I would try to frame time in terms they understood. I would tell them that it was only one episode of “Blue’s Clues” or 4 “Dora’s” longer. It seemed to help them frame the overall time. But unless your trip is only one “Blue’s Clues” they are going to ask again. As your kids reach elementary school age, it can be useful to give them a watch or make a clock very visible. I would then write down our approximate arrival time on a piece of paper I would tape on the seat in front of them. This helped my especially antsy son and helped remind him so he didn’t continue to ask every few minutes! How to entertain your kids on long trips My next tip is to break up long car rides into 30 minute sections and give them something new to play with every half hour. I would do a mix of dollar store toys, books I could read to them, coloring or sticker books, a favorite DVD, snacks, or song time. My kids favorite thing when they were small was Little Passport If you haven’t heard of it, check out the link. That allowed them to concentrate on smaller chunks instead of hours. As the kids have gotten older, I still try to have something to break up trips longer than 5-6 hours. They still like candy, movies, and even coloring books! I also recommend trying to break up long trips. When the kids were very young, we would try to have something to do every 2 hours on long trips. We might stop at something as simple as a grocery store and let the kids pick out a treat. Other ideas are playgrounds close to your route, museums you can check out in less than 30 minutes, fast food locations with indoor playscapes, even rest stops where there is room to get out and move. Just like anything you do with your kids, practice makes perfect. My kids can now go 15 hours in a car without once asking how much longer or complaining. Of course they can all read a clock and their concept of time is very solid, but they were doing great by the time each of them was 7 or 8. Keep working at it because the payoff is great family road trips with no more, “Are we there yet?”! Happy Travels! Like this article? Pin it for later!
